This weekend I attended the closing down party at the Underground night club in Southport, which is one of my all-time favourite haunts. Like many closing down sales and farewell tours it was very busy. It showed what potential the club had, and how popular the place is with its customers.

If every night was like Saturday night I very much doubt the club would be shutting down. So why is it shutting down? I put that down to mediocre marketing. Although the club has built up an impressive level of brand loyalty with its customers, by providing a good quality service, it hasn’t taken advantage of this. The club could have easily and cheaply used social media to interact with its customer base.

Here are a few ways that the club owners could have engaged more with their customers.

• Invite clubbers to get involved by voting for what music should be played or what drinks should be sold
• Provide an online space for customers to share their photographs and videos
• Issue a regular newsletter informing customers about changes to the night club
• Write a blog to provide information about bands that will soon be performing, recommend new artists to listen to and songs to download, and talk about changes being made to the club
• Invite the public to review music

The Underground did run a Facebook group that regularly issued messages about what bands were playing each week. But this can quickly be seen as spam and the message is lost. Nobody wants to be told the same thing each week. It’s boring and it could actually harm your brand.

On thursday I made my way down to London for an interview at Cake Brand Entertainment. I very much like the company, their work and their offices. Anywhere with an aquarium in the reception gets my vote.

Discussion ranged from the nightlife in Southport to my dissertation and my blog post about the Logobama viral website a few days ago. A topic, which appeared on the Cake blog a few hours later. It’s probably just a coincidence, but a cool coincidence nonetheless.

I should find out about the job soon. So wish me luck!

Plastic Little performed last night at the Club NME night at the Underground in Southport. The band hale from Philadelphia and recently toured with Dizzee Rascal. I particularly enjoyed the songs that they covered by The Cure and The Smiths. Strangely they’re only doing 3 shows in the UK. Stranger still they’re performing in Southport, then London and then in Liverpool. Seems like a lot of travelling to me, considering Southport and Liverpool are so close.

Last night I went the Underground club in Southport to see what the new Club NME night is like. A band called Pencil Toes were playing, they sounded alright I suppose. Afterwards they played the usual music, which was great as always. I do like Underground but there is a feeling that they’ve sold out, by running the NME night. I’m not sure. The music was still good, although I did think the atmosphere wasn’t like how it used to be. A great shame.

As we entered the club we were stamped with the club’s logo. This if fine. However, I fell asleep on my hand last night and woke up this morning with the club’s logo emblazoned across my face. Talk about using your customers as brand ambassadors!
