The social network had made the decision to pair advertisements with relevant social actions from a user’s friends to create Facebook Ads. This is supposed to make advertisements more interesting and more tailored to you and your friends. But the service is opt-out, not opt-in, which some may see as an infringement on their privacy.

To stop your photos from being used in the way click here to update your privacy settings.

Most Sunday’s I indulge myself by taking a couple hours to read the newspapers. Yet I find the sheer amount of waste they create extremely frustrating.

If I were to cut out all of the articles and adverts that I read and found interesting, and placed them in a pile, I’m sure that pile would be much smaller than the pile of paper ready for the recycling bin. The sports supplement exemplifies this perfectly; I have no interest in sport so this huge wad of paper goes straight in the bin. What an utter waste!

Surely there must be some way for newspapers to provide a more tailored news service that gives their audience exactly what they want. Like an iPlayer for news.

RSS feeds go some way in providing people with a way of subscribing to the types of news they are interested in, but I think newspapers could go further in providing a customised service.

Newspapers could provide a totally tailored news service by employing RSS feeds to offer subscribers a wider range of choice. For example rather than being able to subscribe to news about sport you could subscribe to articles purely about badminton.

Using keywords to tag articles could allow users to subscribe to news about particular people, companies, countries or whatever. This could all then be fed into a single personalised and customisable RSS feed that the user can subscribe to and read on their smartphone, PDA or computer. Or they could pump all of this news into a Guardian24 style PDF that the user could read on their eBook reader or even print out.

I imagine this could be funded with advertising or a subscribtion service, but whether users would be willing to subscribe I’m not sure. Would you rather pay to subscribe to a personalised RSS feed or put up with advertising?

Today, I had a missed call from +88 213 300 300. As usual with phone numbers I don’t recognise I googled the number. Normally this will bring up a company website or something on Yellow Pages.

Today this brought up a great website called Who Calls Me. The site lets users report suspect phone numbers belonging to scam artists, telemarketers and other unsolicited callers. Great news for people working in offices where sales calls are a daily annoyance.

For the particular number that rang me there were more than one hundred comments in the last six weeks reporting it as a scam. The site advises to not answer the call or ring back as you could be charged as much as €13 per minute.

Do not answer or reply to calls from this number: +88 213 300 300.

During a recent trip to Berlin, my friends and I came across moving advertisements in Alexanderplatz. The adverts, which I assume were either robotic or remote controlled, really grabbed my attention as they whizzed around the town centre. At which point my friend said: “I bet Matt blogs about that!” She was right.

Being quirky is a great way to stand out, but it’s not sustainable. TV commercials and moving billboards were once new, exciting and different ways to advertise, and so captured the public’s imagination. But now they’re just background noise, unless the actual advert is interesting.

The same is true in PR. There are plenty of ways to spice up press releases, but if the content is as dull as dishwater than there’s no point. Rather than focus all our attention on jazzing up the delivery with pretty designs and social media add-ons, we should ensure the we give the actual press release the same amount of attention. After all it’s the really creative adverts that we remember.

Check out this video of mobile adverts in Berlin by Mrneglect:

According to the New York Times bloggers are living in a world of 24/7 stress. Berocca news jacked this by setting up a website offering a free blogger relief pack to rejuvenate stressed bloggers with much needed vitamins and free goodies. That’s a great strategy to create some online buzz about your product, it which is why worked well with many bloggers picking up on the story and blogging about it.

That was in June. Two months passed and for many of us there was no sign of the relief pack. Not good news for blogger’s stress levels, or the nice people at Berocca who must have been quite concerned by posts like this declaring the exercise a PR fail. Since commenting on that post, I received a relief pack in just a matter of days. Coincidence?

To avoid this Berocca should have carried out a weekly send out of relief packs so that bloggers weren’t waiting too long to receive their goody bag. And, when they did send out the relief packs they should have taken a little time to address the nice letter inside with my name. Dear blogger doesn’t exactly build up a personal relationship with the brand. That said I’m very impressed by the campaign. It’s very brave for a non-techy brand to experiment with blogger outreach and I commend that. Also, it’s especially important to try relationship building exercises like this during a recession when premium brands like Berocca are in danger of being abandoned by consumers in favour of cheaper supermarket versions.

Well done Berocca, this blogger is now full of vitamin goodness and will stay that way.

For those of you that don’t know, the Opus Project is an iniative by the University of Huddersfield to promote creative works and designs by current and former students.
